No Regrets

Reasons why I joined ICEE:
- I decided that I wanted to do something more meaningful than tabulating numbers at a semi-stationary desk-bound job. Teaching English to students in a developing country seemed like a fulfilling job, because it would allow me to personally impact the lives of others and help them maximize their potentials.
- They do not require you to have a background in education or be an English major graduate. They believe that as long as you are a native/fluent speaker of English, you are able to contribute to the success of students wanting to learn English.
- Training is provided to help prepare volunteers (especially those who have never taught or had little experience teaching) for the job.
- I felt that the goals and set-up of ICEE was what I wanted in an NGO.
1) They are not biased towards prestigious schools. Instead they are open to explore opportunities with any school.
2) The pattern of teaching students is truly needs or ability based. The student’s language ability is first individually assessed, subsequently the teachers tailor their lesson plans according to the level and needs of students.
- The corporate structure of ICEE is pretty flat…we have a Director, a Team Leader, and the rest of us are co-workers.
After teaching for 6 months…
- I don’t have any regrets of quitting my full-time job and being a volunteer teacher.
- I’m more thankful for the life I have, and even more thankful that life is now more fulfilling than before.
- It feels great to see students improve in their English, and gain greater confidence about themselves.
